Option 1
Purchasing stock and storing it at one of the suppliers in their warehouse.
It's advisable to purchase your bestsellers in a timely manner. Factories often stop producing new products a few days before Chinese New Year (some even as early as January 20th!). They don't want to be left with too much inventory during Chinese New Year. It's important to note that factories in China decide for themselves when they close and when they reopen. This can vary by a few days per factory, and that's a risk you should be aware of. Therefore, it's highly recommended to purchase your bestsellers as soon as possible and store them with one of the suppliers that continues to operate during Chinese New Year. This way, you'll experience virtually no delays! This only applies if the shipping company closes for a few days (1-3 days). Keep in mind that after the holiday, some suppliers may have a backlog of products for which you haven't purchased inventory and for which the factories were closed. In China, each factory decides for itself how long it will be on holiday. Therefore, it's impossible to predict how long a specific factory will remain closed.
Option 2
Continue selling as always, in combination with clear communication (in advance) to the consumer.
If you clearly communicate on your site that the product has a long delivery time, this is also an opportunity to resell during Chinese New Year. It is very important that you communicate this to the consumer in different ways. You can indicate that your goods are produced in China where there is currently a low occupancy due to the holiday period (Chinese New Year) or that a production error has occurred that has caused a delay in shipment. Here are several ways on how you can communicate this to the consumer:
1. Communicate on your product page that you work with pre-orders. Production will take place soon and these customers will be the first to receive the product.
2. Communicate as standard in your order confirmation email that delivery times have increased enormously due to a production error and that you kindly ask the customer to be patient for a while. You can also offer a discount code on a next order to avoid the long wait.
3. Make sure you clearly state on the product page that there may have been delays in the delivery process due to a production error. Place this at the bottom/top of your product description in a striking font. Your customer service can always fall back on this.
4. Temporarily adjust the delivery conditions on your site. Indicate that due to the low occupancy / production error there may be delays in the delivery process and that these are also unforeseeable circumstances for you. Unfortunately we have no influence on this.
NOTE OPTION 2:
We advise anyone currently experiencing a negative balance sheet/cash flow and choosing option 2 not to scale faster than their cash flow allows. Longer delivery times often result in a hold. This can then lead to disputes, tying up your funds. As a result, you no longer have the money to pay for the purchase of the goods, further spiraling into a negative spiral. Of course, it remains crucial to mention the delays in your emails and, if necessary, on the product page. Fast and clear communication with your customers is key during this period! Adapt your customer service accordingly.
